Project 3 THEORY

The Concept

The concepts I chose were

A) Unrestrained spaces that flow, by Mies Van der Rohe, to determine the light rail's stop with respect to its urban context.

This is the structure that I came up with to represent the concept. Although these open faced boxes enclose a specific boundary within it, there's so much freedom for movement through all the other sides. I added in a subtle break in the boundary at one of the corners to emphasize on its 'unrestrained' character,
In order to stay true to my concept (unrestrained spaces that flow), I decided to use my first structure as the roof of my station platform. This way passengers and pedestrians can freely walk in, out or through the platform as they please. There are no restricting boundaries or walls on any of the 4 sides of the platform.
I decided to give the interior of my roof structure a transparent glass material so that the view to the sky is not restricted either. 



B) Forming a new structure over already existing functional structures by Studio gang to tackle the issue that decided upon: Sustainability.

I tried to be straightforward again with my approach to creating this structure. I took a simple box, which I feel would be a classic depiction of a common functional structure,  and subtracted prisms from it to create something new.

Since, I chose this structure to use the subdivide and smooth tool on, it has taken up a curvilinear geometry. I've decided to use this structure to bring attention to the need for sustainability.

It's atrium-like glass opening at the top would diffuse the sunlight as it passes through making it a central source of light. It's open on the other sides as well allowing for natural lighting during the day.

The curvilinear structure also blocks the cold winds that blow perpendicular to it (along university mall) and instead directs most of the cold winds around itself. This way people can enjoy the naturally ventilated space without being exposed to the harsh winds.

It's convex curved surface makes the wind flow faster along it. This would cool down the roof and prevent any overheating caused by the exposure to the sun. 

Although, there are other factors I can include that make this stop sustainable, the above points can be attributed solely to the structure of the stop which is in line with "Forming a new structure over already existing functional structures.
